In Czech Republic coloproctology was and traditionally is a part of surgery. Surgeons of the end of 19th century, especially Vinzenz Czerny, who published as the first in 1884 abdomino-perineal resection of the rectum, and Carl Maydl, who modified colostomy in 1888 still known under his name, became pioneers of this medical speciality here.
The development of coloproctology as the surgical subspecialty resulted in 80´ to establishing the Czech Section of Coloproctology. Being a part of Czech Society of Surgery section organizes and participates in many activities including Annual meeting of coloproctology.
Exceptional success of the Czech coloproctology was Congress ECCP in 2001 in Prague chaired by Jaroslav Faltýn.

Because of high incidence of colorectal cancer in Czech Republic the significant attention is concerned with this disease: prevention, particularly secondary in the form of screening, comprenhensive multimodal treatment, follow-up and research. Thanks to well organized system high quality care about congentital colo- and anorectal defects, IBD, degenerative colonic diseases and functional disorders is available.
Since 1970 there exist well organized statistical evidence here and even National oncological registry.
