Ireland
The Irish Association of Coloproctology is an all-Ireland organisation of surgeons with members in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Our AGM takes place each May and is held jointly with the Chapter Meeting of The Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (www.acpgbi.org.uk), of which we are active members. The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (www.rcsi.ie) is our postgraduate training body and colorectal surgeons are well-represented on its governing Council. In more recent years, the number of academic posts in Coloproctology have greatly increased with a concomitant increase in the number and impact of colorectal publications originating in Ireland.
We currently have four Professors of Colorectal Surgery in the Republic of Ireland including Professor J. Calvin Coffey in Limerick and Professor John Hyland, Professor Des Winter and Professor P. Ronan O'Connell in Dublin. Professor O'Connell, in particular, is well-known to members of the ESCP in his role as Secretary and as nominee for President in Waiting.
The President of the Irish Association of Coloproctology is Mr David Waldron, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Limerick Regional Hospital and Mr Waldron is also our ESCP representative.
