What made you want to specialise in colorectal surgery?

One of the most challenging surgical fields with enormous potential for improvements in patients’ lives.

What is the best part of the job?

The fabulous personal satisfaction of working with brave patients, excellent colleagues and a superb team.

How long have you been involved in ESCP and what made you want to become involved?

Almost from the outset. It started small but with big ideals and values that echoed with me. One of the most ambitious and well-run groups in the world. Who would not want to be involved? It’s fantastic fun and energises all of us.

What do you value most about being involved in ESCP?

Camaraderie with the best in the field. If I cannot be one, then let me stand among them.

What would your one bit of advice for younger surgeons starting their career in colorectal surgery be?

Smile. Be patient and professional. Never lose your cool or sight of what’s important. Neither neglect the patients’ needs nor your own. Value their family as you value yours. Call relatives after big operations. Ask colleagues for advice.
