What made you want to specialise in colorectal surgery?

I did not want to examine armpits and breasts for the rest of my life. I did not want to do vascular surgery as it is usually a staged approach to amputation.

What is the best part of the job?

Doing surgery that gives a patient with multiple enterocutaneous fistulas their life back.

How long have you been involved in ESCP and what made you want to become involved?

Since the conference in Vienna (2012). I welcomed the chance to get involved with all the collaborative projects.

What do you value most about being involved in ESCP?

The widespread collaboration in all areas.

Tell us your best ESCP conference anecdote?

It just has great programmes at every conference.

What would your one bit of advice for younger surgeons starting their career in colorectal surgery be?

Find a good mentor.
