In deep sorrow, we are saddened to inform you of the death of our colleague, Irmgard E. Kronberger, born February 15th 1976, who passed away much too early in life on September 2nd 2021, surrounded by her loving family after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Irmgard’s outgoing personality, sense of humour and boundless talents will be sorely missed in our society.

Irmgard attended Medical School at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, and started her General Surgery training at the Department of Visceral, Transplant and Thoracic Surgery in Innsbruck in 2007 focusing on surgical oncology and coloproctology. She worked there as consultant and leader of the coloproctology unit where she could represent and develop the objectives and philosophy of the ESCP with great enthusiasm and altruism.

She was chair of the national work group of coloproctology in Austria and Austrian national representative of the ESCP 2018-2021, where she enjoyed collaborating in a European scientific community and appreciated the friendly reunion at our Annual Meetings.

Irmgard loved to motivate and engage young colleagues with coloproctological issues and glanced as team-leader at the Department of Surgery. She organized and chaired several national coloproctology meetings and conducted several clinical trials. She served as national lead in collaborative research networks like GlobalSurg and CovidSurg in the recent past.

The most important impact for her research and thirst for knowledge was her dedication to her patients’ needs and worries, making her a devoted and trustful colleague. Irmgard will be remembered and missed by us all, who admired her open-minded and helpful character.
