Israel

  • Location: Israel is located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea, serving as a crossroads between Europe, Asia, and Africa. It's bordered by Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, and Egypt to the southwest.
  • Area: Approximately 22,000 square kilometers (8,500 square miles)
  • Population: Around 10.15 million people (7.7 million Jews and 2.1 million Arabs)
  • Medical system: Israel's social medical setup is a universal, mandatory, socialized system based on the 1995 National Health Insurance Law, guaranteeing all residents a broad benefits package via four competing, non-profit health funds, funded by income-linked health tax
  • Number Colorectal Surgeons in Israel: 40 
  • ESCP Membership: 25

All surgeons in Israel are part of the ISS (Israeli Surgical Society), which has as one of its daughter societies the ISCRS (The Israeli Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery).

  • Past Chairs: Hagit Tulchinsky (2017-2020), Oded Zmora (2014-2017)
  • Recent annual meeting: November 2024, a joint meeting of the Israeli Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery and the Israeli Society of Abdominal wall Surgery.

We have annual meetings alternating between a single day (when the ISS has its biennial conference) and two days on alternate years when there is no ISS conference. 

Every 3-4 months all members are invited to a clinical cases and journal update meeting in person. 

The ISCRS has a yearly fellowship program for young surgeon’s post residency looking to specialize in colorectal surgery. They rotate between the larger and most active colorectal units in the country.
