Landspitali – University hospital is the main hospital located in the capital, Reykjavik. There is the main centre for malignant colorectal surgery in Iceland, but benign conditions are also treated. There is a long tradition of minimally invasive surgery both with laparoscopic and robot assisted.

The next biggest hospital, is Akureyri hospital, located in Akureyri. Until recently, elective malignant colorectal surgery was rarely performed and if so, mainly done with a laparotomy. But recently, laparoscopic partial colon resections have been performed there in co-operation with Landspitali.

In Iceland, there is a strong tradition of independent working specialist working outside the hospital. These private colorectal surgeons take care of many patients with benign diseases and often are involved in the diagnosis of malignancies.
