Scientific validation of surgical strategies is necessary to ensure their safety and benefits. It makes responsible evolution of clinical practice possible. Several institutions all over the world are working joining efforts to collect enough data to achieve strong conclusions. I was delighted and honored to be chosen as the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) travelling fellow to Japan in November 2015. Dr Eiji Shinto (National Defense Medical College) welcomed me on my arrival; he had been the Japanese Society of Coloproctology (JSCP) travelling fellow to the ESCP meeting in 2014. A few days prior to ESCP Dublin 2015, twelve senior trainees in coloproctology took part in pre-congress placements at six centres of excellence in Ireland. Since 2008, ESCP have arranged short visits to centres that are local to the annual conference, with full support from Covidien who provided an educational grant to cover travel expenses and local accommodation. These grants have enabled young surgeons to get a glimpse of operations in another centre/country.Page 16 of 21
