Russia has an area of about 17 million square kilometers and situated both in Europe and Asia. It makes Russia the largest country in the world. More than 100 ethnic groups live in Russia and numbers 142.9 million citizens. Russian is the official language of Russia and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. In addition to 144 million native speakers Russian is also the secondary language of 114 million people all over the world. Surgery in Russia runs parallel to that of surgery in continental Europe. The first Russian manual on surgery was published by Prof. I. Bush in 1807. The glorious chapters of history of surgery in Russia content the name of Nikolay Pirogov (1810-1881) who was a great scientist and outstanding organiser of field surgery, he pioneered Ether narcosis in the battlefield in 1847; Vladimir Demikhov (1916-1998) was an organ transplant pioneer, who did several transplantations in the 1930s and 1950s, such as the transplantation of a heart into an animal and a lung-heart replacement in an animal. His monograph "Experimental transplantation of vital organs" (1960) later published in 1962 in New York, Berlin and Madrid, became the world's first monograph on transplantology; Pavel Androsov (1906-1969) was an inventor of several stapler devices. Coloproctology was established as a licensed speciality in 1988, though first specialized proctology department appeared in USSR 1946 and in 1962 there were 15 specialised coloproctology units. Nowadays every region of Russia has coloproctology care departments. Population: 143 millionESCP Members: 19 activeSociety: Russian Association of ColoproctologistsESCP Representative Name: Dr. Armen Vardanyan (This email address is being protected from spambots. The official journal of the Association is Колопроктология. The national congress of coloproctologists is organized annually. The current president of the Russian Association of Coloproctologists is Prof. Yury Shelygin (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). Achievements Currently, we developed National Guidelines for all colorectal diseases and most of them have already been approved by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. Reference centers for pathomorphology and diagnostics (CT,MRI,UC, endoscopy) have been established and successfully operated on Ryzhikh National Medical Research Center of Coloproctology base. Every year the Russian scientific societies organise meetings with the aim of improving specialists qualification. Every month we demonstrate live surgery with feedback for another hospitals. Our national journal “Coloproctologia” is already in the Scopus data base. Future plans It is planned to continue trips to various regions of the country in order to assess the quality of the coloproctological care provided to our patients. One of the tasks is to extend mini invasive and organ saving surgery to the national level. We support surgeon activities in the Russian and European coloproctology association meetings. We are continuing to develop a national colorectal cancer registry and IBD Registry.

Dear Colleague, welcome to the Romanian page of the ESCP website The Romanian Society of Coloproctology (RSCP) is a dynamic and evolving professional society on a trajectory of growing national and international recognition. We bring together surgeons, gastroenterologists, and allied specialists who share the unified goal of offering the best possible treatment options in colorectal pathology and proctological care.Though coloproctology is not a formal subspecialty in Romania, it functions as a collaborative, interdisciplinary field bridging general surgery and gastroenterology, supported by complementary disciplines such as radiology, oncology, anesthesiology, stoma therapy, psychology and nursing. SRCP serves as a platform for interaction, continuing education, and exchange of ideas. Through the society, members gain access to national and international conferences, educational programs, and networking opportunities with opinion leaders and innovators in the field. Focusing on Romanian patients with stage II (high-risk) and stage III colon cancer, the project combines genomic and microbiome analyses to identify new biomarkers and therapeutic targets that may improve outcomes and guide personalised treatment strategies. Future Plans The Romanian Society of Coloproctology (SRCP) is committed to shaping the next chapter of coloproctology in Romania through growth, collaboration, and excellence. Building on the society’s solid foundation and increasing international engagement, our focus for the coming years will be on sustainable development and meaningful impact, both nationally and within the ESCP network. Our strategic priorities include: Expanding national collaboration by connecting centers across the country and creating a structured network that promotes consistent training, data exchange, and shared clinical experience in colorectal care. Enhancing education and training, with hands-on workshops, live surgery courses, and multidisciplinary symposia designed to strengthen technical expertise and teamwork between surgeons, gastroenterologists, and allied professionals. Establishing a national clinical and research registry to facilitate outcome monitoring, evidence generation, and integration into European audits and studies. Empowering the next generation, through dedicated mentorship programmes, trainee fellowships, and young specialist sessions that encourage active involvement in ESCP activities and leadership pathways. Fostering international partnerships by developing joint projects and scientific exchanges with other European societies, reinforcing Romania’s contribution to global knowledge and innovation in coloproctology. Promoting awareness and prevention, through public education initiatives and advocacy for national screening and early detection of colorectal disease. Through these initiatives, SRCP aims to strengthen the Romanian community of coloproctology, promote excellence in patient care, and position Romania as an active and forward-looking partner within the European Society of Coloproctology.

Welcome to the Portuguese area of the ESCP. We are committed to promoting the highest standards in the surgical treatment of colorectal diseases and advancing the practice of coloproctology in Portugal. Our community brings together professionals dedicated to improving patient outcomes through education, research, and collaboration. About Portugal Portugal is the oldest nation-state in Europe. It was founded in 1143. Its current borders were established in the mid-13th century, making it one of the oldest in Europe and the world. Data from the 2023 Statistics Portugal shows that we have a population of 10.639 million, and according to 'WHO ranking of health systems report' in 2000 (the most recent WHO report), Portugal ranked 12th in the best public health performing systems in the world, ahead of many other developed countries like the United Kingdom, Germany or even Sweden. Portugal's health system is also ranked positively in the 2023 OECD report, highlighting it has one of the highest life expectancies in the EU at 81.5 years. Since the late 1970s, Portugal has had a National Health Service (Serviço Nacional de Saúde - SNS), which provides universal social coverage and is funded by public taxes. The Portuguese Health System (SNS) is praised for its resilience, universal access, and efficiency in handling chronic diseases. Currently, the private sector has undergone a significant development, becoming a complement to the health care provided to the Portuguese population, from the point of view of the national health system. WHO - Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN 2022) has reported that colorectal cancer in Portugal had the highest incidence of all cancer sites (15.2%), being responsible for 10,575 new cases/year and the second leading cause for oncologic mortality, originating 4,809 deaths/year (14.2%). Over the last decade, reference centres for the cancer treatment, have been developed. These centres are currently in a process of consolidation and audit development. A significant number of Portuguese hospitals already have surgical departments with dedicated units, namely for colorectal disorders. Recent colorectal cancer available data raises concerns and calls for action. To face up to this challenge, it is important to improve dedicated colorectal cancer reference centres and promote specialised surgeons training. ESCP Representative Nuno Rama, MD.
