Main clinical and research interests

My clinical and academic interests focus on colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and complex pelvic surgery. I have a particular interest in robotic colorectal surgery and advanced pelvic exenterative procedures for locally advanced and recurrent malignancies. My research also explores surgical innovation, including 3D modelling, simulation, and the integration of digital technologies to improve surgical training and patient outcomes.

What made you want to specialise in colorectal surgery?

Colorectal surgery offers a unique combination of technical complexity, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the opportunity to make a profound impact on patients’ quality of life. I was particularly drawn to the challenge of managing complex pelvic disease and the evolving role of innovation and technology in improving outcomes.

What is the best part of the job?

The most rewarding aspect is being able to offer meaningful, often life-changing treatment to patients, particularly in complex or advanced disease. Equally important is mentoring the next generation of surgeons and contributing to academic progress within the field.

How long have you been involved in ESCP and what made you want to become involved?

I have been involved with ESCP for several years through research collaborations, guideline development, and educational activities. I was motivated to become more actively involved due to ESCP’s leading role in shaping high-quality, evidence-based colorectal practice across Europe.

What do you value most about being involved in ESCP?

The collaborative environment and the opportunity to work with leading experts across Europe. ESCP provides a platform for advancing clinical standards, research, and education, which ultimately benefits patients.

Tell us your best ESCP conference anecdote?

One of the most memorable aspects of ESCP conferences is the open exchange of ideas - whether during formal sessions or informal discussions.

What would your one bit of advice for younger surgeons starting their career in colorectal surgery be?

Stay curious, embrace multidisciplinary collaboration, and seek mentorship early. Focus not only on technical skills but also on understanding the broader patient journey - this is what ultimately defines excellence in colorectal surgery.
