The ESCP Safe-anastomosis Programme in Colorectal Surgery (EAGLE) study concluded in December 2022. Data is being cleaned prior to analysis.

EAGLE was the first of its kind cluster randomised-sequence service improvement study of the ESCP Safe-anastomosis Quality Improvement Intervention to reduce anastomotic leak following right colectomy and ileocecal resection.

During the study, collaborators from 355 hospitals across 61 countries entered almost 3500 patients into the study, with >2000 surgeons from across the world completing the safe-anastomosis educational modules. EAGLE is the first demonstration of an educational intervention being rapidly delivered from the bottom-up to inform and change surgical practice, and was only achieved thanks to the efforts and enthusiasm of the study collaborators.

Data from the study is currently being cleaned prior to analysis and it is planned to submit the first publications to high-impact journals in the first half of 2023. Further news and findings from the study will be shared in due course.

The EAGLE team would like to give their thanks to the thousands of collaborators who took part in this study and helped to form a strong collaborative network of investigators for future studies to improve outcomes for our patients.
