We talked to Professor Donato Altomare, who discusses his role as Chair of the Programme Committee and some of the highlights from the Barclelona 2014 scientific programme. You are currently Chair of the Programme Committee, what are the roles and responsibilities of the committee? The Programme Committee is composed of a group of personalities who are very active in all the fields of coloproctology. They must be up-to-date, active in research and have an extensive knowledge of the literature and authors throughout Europe.

This year, special attention is given to gut microbes and their strong influence on the development of many diseases within the digestive tract, including colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease.

It was my great privilege to have been chosen as the ESCP/JSCP travelling fellow to Japan in 2013.  The fellowship allowed me to fulfil a long-lasting ambition which I had nurtured since many years after listening to the tales of my mentor Prof Bob Steele’s visit to Japan.  My main aims of this fellowship were to specifically observe and expand my learning of sphincter preservation rectal surgery, to experience the technical advances in minimally invasive surgery particularly reduced port surgery, and to interact with academic clinicians and scientists in Japan.
