The 2015 ESCP right colectomy and ileocaecal resection audit collected prospective data on 3,208 patients across 284 centres in 39 countries. The overall anastomotic leak rate was 8.1%.
Patients who developed an anastomotic leak had:
- a higher mortality than those who did not (9.8% versus 1.8%).
- a longer median hospital stay (18 versus 7 days)
- a higher 30-day re-operation and 30-day re-admission rate.

This audit demonstrated the high rate of anastomotic leak worldwide and the severe consequences of leak to patients and health services.
