Objective 2: The anastomotic healing process

There are three phases to the healing process at the site of the anastmosis

  1. Inflammatory phase
  2. Proliferative phase
  3. Remodelling phase

The bursting pressure of an anastomosis increases during the proliferative phase

  • It reaches 60% of its strength of the surrounding bowel by four days
  • It reaches 100% of its strength by one week
